It just isn’t romantic. :( Fortunately in Singapore it hasn’t yet gotten to the point yet where the sexes are so worried about being screwed over by the other party. Divorce is much rarer than in the US, and in my family and extended family, there’s only 1 person (an uncle living in Australia) who has gotten divorced. That said, I’m sure some of the marriages aren’t idyllic, but they aren’t so horrible that they’re terminated. But the principle I like. Men are generally the gatekeepers to commitment. I just don’t think it has to be asked explicitly like that. I would hope that a man could tell whether he’s dating the kinda woman who would be hiding a large personal debt, for instance, looong before he even considers marrying her. I know some pple may disagree with that, but for all of the few ppl I’ve known who turned out to be horrible pple, there were always little red flags early on which I didn’t take seriously. Even in Asia, that respect for the older pple and the experience/wisdom they have is diminishing, I hear. They insist on making their own mistakes before (hopefully, eventually) learning.
