As to socialism, it certainly is a way to concentrate more and more power in the hands of the gov’t and the elites that run the gov’t while giving lip service and some tangible benefits to the people, enough to keep them content (unless it’s so poorly run like Venezuela). I think the dynamic in play is that the powerful want to concentrate power into as few organizations as possible (preferably ones they control or that they can take over) so that they can take over those organizations or already control them and thus have more total power than if power were more diffuse. Socialism seems one such way. Crony capitalism another, where the gov’t favors the companies friendly to them and punishes the others.
